The Langvlei is perfectly situated in the Wildness National Park to head out and explore all the region has to offer. Day trips are the delight of the region, from the beaches, lakes and lagoons, to the mountains and forests, to the restaurants, cafes and markets there is a lot to do. Make sure you also enjoy a sunrise or moonrise over the lake and all the wonderful sights and sounds surrounding the cottage in nature.
Bird watching – Malachite Bird Hide on Bo-Langvlei lake (1 min drive) and Rondevlei Bird Hide on Rodevlei lake; more than 230 species have been sighted in the park
Forest walks – Brownhooded Kingfisher trail on the Duiwerivier takes you up a lush valley and ends at a small waterfall (1 min drive); similarly the Giant Kingfisher trail takes you up the Touw River on a good boardwalk to a large waterfall (5 min drive); Other walks in the Wilderness National Park include the Pied Kingfisher and the Cape Dune Molerat trails.
Lake and river swims – Touw River and Island Lake are open to water sports and fishing (5 min drive) and there are a number of smaller kloofs with waterfalls up the Quteniqua Mountains.
Ocean walks and swims – The Wilderness Beach stretches for numerous kilometers and offers safe swimming. Similarly the Swartvlei Beach, close by Sedgefield, offers great beach walks and good swimming.
Surfing – Victoria Bay is known to be one of the best surf spots in South Africa (15 min drive, close to George)
Canoeing – the Touw River offers great opportunities and Eden Adventures facilitates a 3-day guided tour
Mountain biking – numerous trails in the area offer great opportunities
Horse riding – On the old George-Knysna road there are riding opportunities
Big Tree Outing – stand in awe of a 700-800 year old Outeniqua Yellowwood on the Seven Passes Road (15 min drive away)
Arts and Crafts – with the tranquil beauty of Wilderness as inspiration a number of talented artists are found in the area, as well as an art route and a regular craft market. Every Saturday morning the Wild Oats market takes place by Sedgefield.
